Owning a coffee shop has been a huge dream of mine, and now that dream is a reality I’ve definitely found the journey, exhilarating, exhausting, exciting, challenging and fun all in one. The initial month is a rollercoaster ride filled with highs, lows, and a plethora of insights.
So, I thought I’d share five valuable lessons I've learned during my first month owning Nook & Cranny coffee shop.
You will have quiet days
In the world of entrepreneurship, not every day is a bustling success. It's crucial to acknowledge and accept the quiet days. Understanding that these slow periods are a normal part of the journey allows you to use the time wisely. Reflect, strategise, and use these moments to fine-tune your business model, marketing strategy, or personal development.
You will make mistakes, but embrace them as learning opportunities
The road to success is paved with mistakes. Accepting that you will get things wrong is a liberating mindset. Each misstep is a chance to learn, adapt, and grow. Rather than dwelling on errors, view them as stepping stones toward improvement. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs have built their empires on the lessons learned from their own mistakes.
Embrace everyone's support
One of the most surprising and heartening revelations is the incredible support you'll receive from others. Friends, family, and even customers often want to see you succeed and are willing to lend a helping hand. Embrace this generosity, whether it comes in the form of advice, networking opportunities, or emotional support. Building a strong support system is invaluable in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
You will be tired, always
Running a small business is a demanding endeavour that can leave you physically and mentally exhausted. It’s not a 9-5, it’s a 24/7 job.
But, there's a real joy that comes from pursuing your passion. The fatigue is outweighed by the satisfaction of seeing your dreams come to fruition. As the saying goes, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."
Be Patient
The enthusiasm of starting a new venture might tempt you to try and do everything at once. However, the reality is that success takes time. Patience is not just a virtue but a necessity in the world of entrepreneurship. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the myriad tasks and responsibilities, focus on prioritizing and taking one step at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your business.
January has been a crash course in resilience, adaptability, and self-discovery. Embracing the ebb and flow of entrepreneurship, learning from mistakes, accepting help, finding joy in the journey, and practicing patience are all key components of a successful business venture. As I continue on this exciting path, I just have to remember that the lessons learned in the first month will serve as a solid foundation for the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead.
All the best,
Anna x
